In this Fearless Networker Spotlight, we're featuring Travis and Kristen Butler who once owned a successful landscape business but, were not fulfilled. Within 16 months of joining their Network Marketing company, they have built an organization of 13,000 and average 30-40 enrollments per month.
The Fearless Networker: Welcome! Let’s jump in and get to know one another a bit better. Do you have any unusual or impressive talents you’d like to share with us? Or, something about yourself that would surprise everyone?
Travis Butler: Kristen is extremely bad at karaoke! But seriously, she is amazing at building relationships. It's really powerful how she brings relationships to a different level that most others don't. She creates the culture.
Kristin Butler: Travis used to race motocross! He is a really passionate person and loves to share his passion with others.
The Fearless Networker: What would you say is the most courageous thing you have done in your life?
Kristen Butler: Starting over with a new company; I was scared to death! I had wrapped my WHOLE identity into the company I was representing and all my friends were in the company I had just left.
After leaving one company and starting with another, I had the belief that if this new venture failed, then I must be doing something wrong. I was scared to start over again. I was successful in my previous company, but what if I was a one hit wonder? It was the bravest thing I had to face. It felt like Travis and me against the world. A Jerry Maguire movie moment!
Kristen Butler: It is impossible for me to geek out. I am a social media coach with zero technical abilities. When technical things go wrong, I cannot be blamed! I don't understand any of it.
Travis Butler: I like new technology, especially the kind that fits in the palm of my hand. I'm excited about the new iPhone because good, quality pictures are so important. I get nerdy about that kind of thing.
The Fearless Networker: What were you doing BEFORE you got involved in Network Marketing?
Travis & Kristen Butler: We got married and started a landscape business right out of high school. We've been entrepreneurs since the age of 18! We were selling houses and had the landscape business when we found the Network Marketing profession. The only reason we joined was to get free product; we thought it was a pyramid scheme. That was six and a half years ago, September 2012.
We originally closed our business to build our full-time Network Marketing career. We were with that company five years. When we left, we restarted the landscape business and did very well. It took all our courage to close it a second time. But, we had to because our $30,000 per month “traditional” business was holding us back from making $300,000 per month in a Network Marketing business.
The Fearless Networker: How did you FIRST get introduced to the Network Marketing profession and, honestly, what was that experience like for you?
Kristen Butler: I was in a Direct Sales company briefly when I was 20. I was successful but, after getting pregnant it was too much to host house parties. So, I stopped and had no residual income. At the time, I didn't realize the difference between Direct Sales and Network Marketing.
A friend had joined a Network Marketing company. I was interested in the product but, tight on money. So, I thought I'd sell enough to get free product. Two months into the business we attended a training where we met people high in our upline. We were hanging out by the pool with successful leaders. It was casual and comfortable. We thought…this could be us!
Travis was quiet, I didn't know what he was thinking. Then there was this pivotal moment when he asked, “How do we get on that private jet?”
He had realized that this is a solid profession. We could really make money doing this and we didn't have to be a certain type of person or couple to do it. We wouldn't relate to someone too professional or perfect. If the down-to-earth people we were meeting could do it, then we could too.
The Fearless Networker: Okay, now for the stats…how long have you been involved in the Network Marketing profession, how long have you been with your current company, how many people have you personally enrolled into your company and what is the current size of your organization?
Travis & Kristen: We've been in the Network Marketing profession for six and a half year. And, have been with our current company about 16 months where we've personally sponsored 500 individuals. We average 30 to 40 enrollments per month and have an organization of around 13,000.
The Fearless Networker: What does a typical day in your life look like?
Kristen Butler: I'm a hot mess; I don't follow a schedule at all, sleep in and wake up around 9:30 a.m.
I try to be consistent by starting one new conversation a day AND connect with someone on my team everyday. Travis and I have lunch together every single day. Then there's a Zoom or call and a lot of time building the business on FaceBook. Travis also grabs new potentials and directs the social media. We have a good balance.
After lunch Travis makes videos and I do FaceBook Lives. Dinner is family time. We have team members all over the country so we work until late at night, kickick it up around 9 p.m. Then we go to bed usually around 1 a.m.
Travis Butler: It's teamwork. We focus on leaders together; Kristen is really good at working with new people and individual team members, while I motivate the whole team and brainstorm ideas to move forward.
Travis & Kristen: Wednesday is family day! And, after the kids are done with their school day, it's family only. Weekends we focus on our family but, will answer calls and questions for our team.
The Fearless Networker: What is your favorite book(s)? How about your favorite genre of music? (If you want to throw in the first concert you attended, go for it! (My first concert was Rush, June 6, 1979 at the Seattle Center Coliseum.)
Travis & Kristen Butler: Besides Fearless Networking? Anything by Tony Robbins.
Kristen Butler: I like just about all music. I listen to a lot of worship music BUT, if I'm in a mood…it's hip hop. So it's either praise or cussing!
Travis Butler: Yep, Kristen raps! I listen to country music, Boyz II Men and Brian McKnight. And we both enjoy R&B.
The Fearless Networker: Tell us about a time, no matter what age, that you wanted something so badly, regardless if it was big or small, that you were unstoppable in pursuing it. What obstacles did you overcome to reach that goal?
Travis Butler: If I want something, there is nothing that is going to stop me. I'm just that type of person. In every business we've tried, we've always been successful. I remember a time I wanted this truck but, I also wanted it for less and got the bank to agree to dropping the price. I'm relentless.
Travis & Kristen Butler: How has it NOT changed?!
Travis Butler: I've seen Kristen experience such personal growth by getting out of her comfort zone. She used to be so shy. I've watched her share her spirit and faith and become a leader; it has been incredible to watch her growth.
Kristen Butler: I wanted it to work and knew I had to go out there and network, develop relationships and stretch myself. I became the person I wanted to be.
Travis is like a preacher! I had never seen that side of him before Network Marketing. He's an amazing mentor, especially to men. He's become a role model. He has a gift to motivate and inspire people; it's so natural. He definitely has a god-given gift.
The Fearless Networker: What gives you joy and/or feeds your passion?
Kristen Butler: I am VERY passionate about travel. Vacations are my love language. Planning vacations is stress relief for me. We put so much effort into getting time away and making memories because we get so caught up building the business.
Vacations allow us to totally unwind and be present. When we travel we are seeing new things and having new experiences. Shared experiences bond you together.
Travis Butler: My grandfather had money but, didn't have his estate set-up correctly in order to gift his family. He passed away right after Kristen and I got married. We started our marriage with debt. Having the burden of debt, well it made me not the best person during that time.
I don't want our kids to have to start out like we did. We've experienced hard financial times and can relate with that struggle. We want our kids to work hard but, not suffer like we did. It gives me joy and a fire to be able to do that for them.
The Fearless Networker: What is your biggest fear?
Kristen Butler: I'm not a super fearful person any longer because I've lost a lot and survived.
Travis Butler: My fear would be letting my family or team down. To me, the fear of failure is more about failing someone else more than failing myself. As a leader, you take on the success or failure of your team.
The Fearless Networker: If you are full-time, how long did it take you to go from being a part-time Network Marketer to going full-time? Were there any hesitations, struggles or roadblocks?
Travis & Kristen Butler: We decided to go into Network Marketing full-time when we started making $10,000 per month. At the time we were working 50 to 60 hours per week with our landscape business. We didn't want to suck the fun out of building our Network Marketing business. We wanted to keep it fun and had a really big feeling that this was going to be huge so we just went after it.
Travis Butler: I love seeing other people win! When we had the landscaping business we were making $30,000 per month. But, there was a missing part. Even though my bills were paid, I still wasn't happy.
I was taking care of my family, but what about my team? I'm truly happiest when I see my team winning like being able to leave corporate jobs and bringing husbands home from military service.
I love seeing people succeed. When they win, it's like we are winning. We want to keep them succeeding. The goal is to help change lives…it's empowering.
The Fearless Networker: What are the failures that you most cherish?
Kristen Butler: Our check dropped from $15,000 per month to $1,500 per month with the last company. During that time, I lost my identity and could have stayed stuck. But, I overcame and got tougher. It was painful then, but great now. Had we not hit rock bottom, we would have not looked at other opportunities.
Everytime there are failures, there is an opportunity for new growth. If you can GO through them, you can GROW through them. We know that we can go through anything and make it. We're so strong and resilient now. We've faced so much and made it!
The Fearless Networker: Let’s end on this note: What’s one solid piece of advice that you’d give someone entering this profession for the very FIRST time? And/or the best advice you’ve ever received?
Kristen Butler: Don't be fearful. When I first started Network Marketing I was so worried about what people were going to say or think. I was so timid.
We're too worried about what others think; it holds us back. As soon as I decided to not care and focus on being loyal and dedicated to my family, I experienced tremendous growth.
Travis Butler: Work like you are the ONLY one working your business. Have faith that one day you will get there and it will all be worth it!
The Fearless Networker: Kristen and Travis, thank you for sharing your humor and for your honesty. You two have a passion that's tangible!
