In this episode, “How to Build Better Rapport” we discuss how charisma and rapport lead to lasting relationships.

When it comes to selling and building a meaningful relationship, keep in mind that people buy from those they know and trust. Rapport provides a feeling of comfort and alignment with an individual or a group. Therefore, it's important to know how to build better rapport.

In the presence of rapport, anything is possible. – Milton Erickson

I've been asked countless times, how to build better rapport. The following rapport building exercise can be a valuable tool for individuals seeking to enhance their interpersonal skills and build meaningful relationships in both personal and professional settings.

1. Drawing the Line

The exercise begins with creating a clear division between the businesses/people you love and those you don't. This introspective step helps you recognize patterns in your preferences and identifies the qualities you appreciate or dislike in others.

2. Identifying Reasons

This step involves delving into the reasons for your preferences. By articulating the traits and behaviors that attract or repel you, you gain deeper self-awareness about the elements that influence your relationships.

3. Trait Analysis

Analyzing the traits that stand out on both sides of the list can provide valuable insights. Positive traits may include qualities like active listening, empathy, authenticity, and a genuine interest in others. Negative traits might involve being dismissive, overly self-centered, or lacking in sincerity.

4. Self-Reflection

Self-reflection is crucial in this exercise. It helps you become aware of the qualities you want to emphasize in your interactions and those you want to avoid or improve upon. This insight can guide your efforts to enhance your rapport-building skills.

5. Application to Business

The exercise is designed to bridge the gap between personal introspection and professional relationships. By recognizing the qualities that foster rapport, you can work on incorporating them into your business interactions.

6. Feedback and Growth

Sharing your findings with others or a mentor can provide additional perspectives and suggestions for improvement. Continued feedback and self-improvement can lead to more authentic and effective rapport-building efforts.

Remember, building rapport and charisma are ongoing processes that require practice, patience, and a genuine commitment to understanding and connecting with others. Here are a few additional points to consider:

Authenticity

The foundation of effective rapport-building is authenticity. While it's important to learn from positive traits you admire, it's equally vital to stay true to your own personality. Trying to mimic others too closely can come across as insincere.

Empathy

Developing the ability to understand and share the feelings of others can significantly enhance your rapport-building skills. When people feel understood and valued, they are more likely to trust and connect with you.

Flexibility and Adaptation

While striving for behavioral flexibility is important, it's also crucial to adapt your approach while maintaining your core values. Flexibility should be a means to better connect, not to manipulate.

Practice Active Listening

Truly listening to others, asking open-ended questions, and showing genuine interest in their perspectives can go a long way in building rapport. This demonstrates your willingness to understand and engage with them.

Patience and Consistency

Building meaningful relationships takes time. Consistently exhibiting positive traits and behaviors will gradually create a reputation for you as someone reliable, trustworthy, and engaging.

Feedback Loop

Continuously seek feedback from those around you to assess the impact of your efforts. Adjust your approach based on their reactions and suggestions.

Ultimately, the goal of the rapport-building exercise and the practices outlined above are to foster genuine connections that lead to lasting relationships and successful interactions both personally and professionally.
